چکیده

This study focuses on the effects of different temperatures and temperature cycling on breakdown voltages of tantalum capacitors. High and low temperature tests and temperature cycling tests were done. In all tests the used temperatures were inside component’s operating temperature limits. After the tests, capacitors were tested for their breakdown voltage. According to results of this research, high or low temperature testing inside component’s operating temperature limits does not have an effect on the breakdown voltage of tantalum capacitors. However, temperature cycling inside component’s operating temperature limits can lower the breakdown voltage of tantalum capacitors.

Testing the effects of temperature cycling on tantalum capacitors

This study focused on the reliability testing of tantalum capacitors. The objective was to develop efficient tests to examine the effects of temperature cycling on capacitor maximum voltage. A test according to the standard JESD22-A104D overlooks the fact that temperature changes often occur while the voltage is on. Capacitors were first tested according to the standard without voltage; the tes...

Scintillation Breakdowns in Chip Tantalum Capacitors

Scintillations in solid tantalum capacitors are momentarily local breakdowns terminated by a self-healing or conversion to a high-resistive state of the manganese oxide cathode. This conversion effectively caps the defective area of the tantalum pentoxide dielectric and prevents short-circuit failures. Typically, this type of breakdown has no immediate catastrophic consequences and is often con...

Failure modes of tantalum capacitors made by different technologies

Generally, tantalum capacitor failure modes have been discussed both for the standard manganese dioxide cathode and the new conductive polymer (CP) type. For standard tantalum in the normal operation mode, an electrical breakdown can be stimulated by an increase of the electrical conductance in channel by an electrical pulse or voltage level. This leads to capacitor destruction followed by ther...

Impact of circuit resistance on the breakdown voltage of tantalum chip capacitors

Experiments are described in this paper whose results suggest a clear mathematical relationship between total circuit resistance (including the capacitor’s ESR) and the voltage at which a capacitor is likely to break down. Specifically, the relationship defines how much each capacitor’s (not precisely known) breakdown voltage is affected by changes in circuit resistance. Since a factor that str...

Characterization of Tantalum Polymer Capacitors

Solid-electrolyte tantalum capacitors were first developed and commercially produced in the 1950s. They represented a quantum leap forward in miniaturization and reliability over existing wound-foil wet electrolytic capacitors. While the solid tantalum capacitor has dramatically improved electrical performance versus wet-electrolyte capacitors, especially at low temperatures, today’s electronic...
